A place where animals teach, and people learn.
In our increasingly digital-dependent and urbanized world, many of us are losing touch with nature. With this in mind, Agnes Barrelet founded the Children’s Nature Retreat to provide a haven where children and adults can connect to the earth, its plants and its animals.
The Children’s Nature Retreat Foundation is a nonprofit organization dedicated to enriching the lives of children in the United States and Africa by responding to their very different needs and filling some of the gaps in their lives. The focus at the animal sanctuary in Alpine, California is to help kids develop a deeper connection with the natural world; while in Burkina Faso, West Africa, the foundation provides support and access to education for children from pre-school age through high school.
Thanks to last year’s DiscoBall fundraiser, children and teenagers from San Diego County were able to visit the Children’s Nature Retreat and experience the magic and unique connection that animals provide. Children with no parents, children with disabilities, and children living in the streets were given access to a day filled with joy, emotions and surprises. Proceeds from DiscoBall 2019 will help care for the animals at the Retreat, grant access to children in need and provide education to children in Burkina Faso, West Africa.
Agnes Barrelet describes Gerald Ramirez as one of the Retreat’s most dedicated supporters – “a great human being and longtime advisor.”
