“My four kids all slept on one full-sized bed and I slept next to them, until we got the phone call that an apartment was available. That was a really, really happy day for us,” shared Marisol Avina-Perkins, who now lives at MAAC’s Laurel Tree Apartments in Carlsbad with her family. “It is so comforting to have a place of our own to call home!”

The Avina-Perkins family is just one of thousands of households whose lives have been changed because of MAAC’s comprehensive housing program. The nonprofit opened its first affordable housing community in 1994. With 144 units, Mercado Apartments was built in Barrio Logan to address the increasing need for safe and affordable homes in San Diego; it was also the first major development for the area in more than fifty years.

Nearly twenty-five years later, MAAC has developed more than 1,000 apartment units at seven affordable housing communities across the county in the cities of Carlsbad, Chula Vista, Lakeside, San Diego and Spring Valley. MAAC’s innovative, holistic approach as a housing developer has brought the agency national recognition and numerous awards.

“MAAC’s work in housing is not slowing down,” President & CEO Arnulfo Manriquez shared with Giving Back Magazine. “We recently purchased land near a transit hub in San Ysidro and we plan to break ground in early 2019 on a mixed-use development which will include 100 units of much needed affordable housing for seniors.”
In addition to Housing, MAAC provides resources and services in the areas of Economic Development, Education, Health & Wellbeing, as well as Advocacy & Leadership Development. MAAC has been a champion for underrepresented communities throughout San Diego County for more than five decades and has provided a space where families in need can find means to self-sufficiency.

Join us as we celebrate MAAC’s impact in the community at the 2018 MAAC Soirée, presented by Southwest Airlines, on Thursday, November 8th from 5:30-8:30 PM at the Sandbox Venue in downtown San Diego.
