What if instead of pursuing a mere job with a college education people also used it to pursue their calling? Barrio Logan College Institute (BLCI) high school senior and CEO Leadership Councilmember, Kehila Moreno, is preparing to do just that. At BLCI, a college-prep after school program, students are taught that a college education can help them break the cycle of poverty in their families and prepare them to tackle some of society’s most difficult challenges.

Last summer, Kehila was only one of three students in the entire nation selected for a fully funded fellowship at Watson University to study social entrepreneurship. She showed up with a good amount of experience under her belt as a student at The School for Entrepreneurship and Technology (SET) and BLCI. While her school offered many of the technical skills needed to start her own socially impactful business, the BLCI leadership programs focused on her authentic reasons for wanting to pursue a cause and the development of her leadership skills on the journey.

“Where’s the pain in your life, and how can you channel that towards a positive outcome for society?” asks BLCI CEO and mentor Jose Cruz.

Kehila witnessed an incident while getting off at a bus stop that changed her life. She saw a young girl being abused as a victim of human trafficking, but she could not do anything about it. Kehila vowed never to feel helpless again by equipping herself with the tools to fight back and provide support to victims. While serving as her school’s Senior Class President and Key Club Co-President, Kehila still finds time to volunteer with victims of human trafficking, teaching them the skills to turn their lives around. She is a true hero already, and there is a lot more to come. For more information, visit www.blci.org.
