Just In Time

Just in Time for Foster Youth.

Just in Time for Foster Youth engages a caring community to help transition age foster youth achieve self-sufficiency and well being. Every year, they serve approximately 650-700 youth (ages 18-26) who have left the foster care system by connecting them to a community of caring adults who help them become Confident, Capable and Connected. That community also includes a Youth Services team composed completely of staff who were once in foster care.

Just in Time believes consistent, long-term help from the heart is the foundation for the success of the youth they serve so that they can thrive and enjoy productive, satisfying lives. That commitment reached a mission milestone on May 1, 2017 when the volunteer-based nonprofit community of resources and relationships for young people in transition from foster care moved into its new youth-friendly space at 4560 Alvarado Canyon Road, visible from Highway 8 right off Mission Gorge Road.

“This is an exciting new chapter in the Just in Time story,” Just in Time Executive Director Don Wells tells Giving Back Magazine. “This move allows us to create a welcoming space for the youth we serve, and bring our staff - Youth Services, Volunteer Engagement, Investor Stewardship and Administration – under one roof for the very first time. It also means our My First Home storage facilities will also be nearby within the same complex.”

The location was chosen based on three priorities: to ensure adequate space for Just in Time workshops and services, increase staff effectiveness by moving from three separate working spaces to one; and to make sure youth have convenient access to available transportation options. The latter goal is clearly met by its location across the street from the Grantville Trolley Station. And My First Home storage facilities are also on-site within the same complex, which means more youth will participate in Just in Time's My First Home program to furnish youth's homes.

The move was completed as Foster Care Month began on May 1, after months of planning and the help of Anne Benge and her workplace design team at Cultura who invested their time and talent to ensure that Just in Time’s new environment reflects their mission and culture. The result will be experienced by youth, volunteers and Just in Time supporters during open house gatherings to engage the community and welcome youth into an inviting, supportive, and empowering space.

Additionally, Just in Time plans to keep a presence at the Casey Family Programs building in Old Town several times a week to support Casey's original intent of giving youth access to collaborative assistance. For the last eight years, Casey has generously granted pro bono space to Just in Time and other non-profits serving youth and families.
