Creating Pathways for Success
Stars & Stripes is a four-day fundraiser that combines fishing, golf and music. Stars & Stripes has raised nearly $30 million since 1997, and South Bay Community Services is one of seven beneficiaries for 2018.
Each year, SBCS touches the lives of more than 50,000 children and families in San Diego County. Former Councilmember, Patty Chavez has been an advocate for SBCS since 2004 and currently serves as their director of communications and external affairs.
10 Things About Patty Chavez & South Bay Community Services
#1 I got a job at 16 with an optometrist who taught me how to place contacts on people! I almost became an optometrist.
#2 I was held up at gunpoint when I was 16 and testified against the perpetrators. They had been holding up many small businesses and I was one of the few who did not get shot or stabbed.
#3 Although I grew up with very little, there was always love. There are so many who do not have that network of love or support. My year as a Councilmember refocused my career. I found that I could give back and remain in my profession.
#4 At SBCS, each year, we receive the holiday wish lists of more than 700 children. Many kids ask for undergarments and socks. It really puts your life in perspective and made an incredible impact on my children who helped me go through the wish lists.
#5 I have both cats and dogs as pets, but I have to say I am a cat person. My cat “Fonzy” is the coolest ever - he is my shadow. My kids say he is my baby...
#6 I tell young people to intern and volunteer whenever they can. It helps to build their skills and get to know more people. Networking is important. And most importantly, don’t be afraid to fail!
#7 I give our interns one big project that they need to develop, organize and bring to fruition. It is such a proud moment when our interns see the project helping so many families.
#8 My favorite part of my job is providing tours – it’s a full circle as that was how I was introduced to SBCS. I love when our guests go beyond their comfort zones and interact with our kids like when grown men sit in preschool chairs, coloring with the little ones.
#9 The funds raised at Stars & Stripes will benefit Mi Escuelita - our free, all-day, therapeutic preschool for children who are victims of domestic violence and abuse.
#10 A UCSD study showed that Mi Escuelita children are scoring above average on state math and reading tests. These children are becoming what they were meant to be before the violence.
